Happy New Year – here’s to a wonderful 2026!

Early January felt very little like winter in southern Colorado, with high temperatures in the 60’s and overnight lows in the 30’s and 40’s.  However, as our departure date approaches on January 10th, it appears that winter will indeed visit with highs forecast in the 20’s and even teens.  So, on January 8th, we hitched up and headed south – and hopefully out of the cold and snow that’s incoming.

Our first night is in Rio Rancho, just north of Albuquerque at the Stagecoach RV – a favorite along this route. It’s still chilly overnight but at least stays above freezing.  With this cold front spread all across the northern tier of New Mexico, we opt to continue south along I-25 versus west on I-40.  Our next night is in another favorite park, the Las Cruces KOA.  We enjoyed two nights here, visiting with a good friend and exploring downtown Las Cruces where we enjoyed delicious pizza at Zeffiro’s Pizzeria.  Offering very unique pizzas, we sampled both their Green Chili Chicken Enchilada and the Potato Rosemary.  We’ll be back!

Our next stop is a quick overnight at the KOA in Benson, AZ.  This is a first time visit for us, but seems better than others we’ve stayed at.  It’s further off the highway, and provides plenty of room in their big sites.  From Benson it’s a short drive to Mesa, Arizona where we join friends at the Encore Mesa Spirit.  As is typical of many of the Encore parks in Arizona – a mix of RV sites and permanent park models.  Mesa Spirt is older, and some of the sites are small.  But, also as typical, the calendar is full of activities and entertainment for residents. Mesa is a great place for resupplying various items, propane, groceries and moving from using the onboard water tank to a fully filtered, soften system now that there is no longer a freezing concern.

From Mesa, it’s about 3 hours directly west to Quartzite, AZ.  As in years past, we’re here to meet other Montana Owners, just in time for the opening of the “Big Tent”.  This is the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show, one of the biggest RV shows in the world, bringing up to a million visitors to the Arizona desert annually.  The BLM lands around Quartzsite are loaded with RVs this year, and the weather is the best we’ve every experienced.  Comfortable 70’s during day and crisp 50’s overnight.

From Quartzite we’re off to Yuma, and another new park, Del Pueblo RV Resort in south Yuma. More from there…

Santa Fe Skies, Santa Fe, NM

Welcome to a beautiful fall day in Santa Fe, New Mexico!
Wow, how summer has flown by!

But, to rewind a bit… Our July trip to Boyd Lake State Park and Cheyenne Frontier Days didn’t go quite as planned.  Instead of visiting friends & family and enjoying concerts, a respiratory infection kept me from attending many of our favorite events.  However, after a short regiment of very strong antibiotics, the infection was on its way out and things were much better.

In early August, we began nearly weekly trips to Lake Pueblo State Park in Pueblo, CO.  After having robot-assisted total knee replacement surgery on August 4th, weekly physical therapy meant that staying at the lake was much easier than a 2.5 hour round trip for a 45 minute therapy session 3 times per week.  In total, we spent 8 weeks and about 30 nights at Lake Pueblo. Warm temperatures, beautiful sunsets and a view over the lake – not a bad place to recuperate!

This weekend we’re in Santa Fe, enjoying the beautiful foliage and fall weather in New Mexico. Our favorite RV park here is Santa Fe Skies.  It’s busy in the park with some guests opting for a few more nights in New Mexico after the closing of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta last weekend.

From here we’re headed home where we’ll winterize and get the trailer ready to deliver to Lazydays RV in Longmont for some warranty work.  We’ll be home for the holidays and then anxiously awaiting our departure to Arizona in mid-January.  More from Arizona in 2026!

2025 Montana Owners Rally – Hermosa, SD

Following our Spring Road Trip and a couple of relaxing weekends at home, we’re once again on the move, this time without the RV.  We’re off to London for a few days enjoying the city sights and then a 12-night Norwegian Fiords Cruise.  Departing aboard the Celebrity Apex from Southampton, England we’ll visit 6 ports along the western shores of Norway and cruise all the way north into the Arctic Circle where we’ll experience over 2 days of endless sunshine.  An amazing trip!

Returning from London and spending less than 24 hours at home, we’re packed up and on the road to Hermosa, South Dakota for the Montana Owners Western Region rally to be held at Heartland RV Park.  Hermosa is an excellent home-base for seeing the sights in the area including Mt. Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Memorial and the scenic drive through Custer State Park.  We had a great time at this rally, catching up with longtime friends and meeting new.

From Hermosa we’re headed home, with an overnight in Gering, NE to visit Scottsbluff and a few nights in Golden, CO for a special wedding in Evergreen, CO.  Our next trip is our annual trek to Cheyenne for Frontier Days, with a stop at Boyd Lake State Park in northern Colorado to visit with friends and family.  More from Cheyenne and Loveland…

South Padre Island, 2025

After departing Tucson, we’ve make a rapid transit of New Mexico and west Texas with our sights set on Kerrville, TX.  Our first night is at Hacienda RV Resort and our second night is at Van Horn RV Park.  We’ve visited both of the RV parks before and have reviewed previously.  On Saturday the 29th, we arrived at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Kerrville, TX.  Friends have  spent part of the winter here, and we’re meeting them before they return to Colorado.  Fairly new to the Jellystone franchise, the former Guadalupe River Resort now boasts a water park, upgraded sites, lots of family amenities and bigger price tags.  Nightly rates in March run from around $120 to over $200 for Riverfront Red Carpet sites.

Kerrville is always a good time with breweries to explore, great restaurants and of course the delicious kolaches from Snowflake Donuts.   We also visited Bandra and had fun at the 11th Street Cowboy Bar and a great dinner at Trail Boss Steak and Grill.  After Kerrville, we’ve spent one night at Choke Canyon State Park before arriving in the south Rio Grande Valley at Harlingen.

We’ve changed things up this year.  Instead of staying on the Island in the RV, we’ll be in a condo.  After watching the salt air rust nearly every exterior part (and even some interior items) we’ve decided the new Montana needs to stay further inland.  We’ll leave the 5th wheel in Harlingen while we go play on the island.  Our 2 bedroom/2 bath condo just steps from the Gulf beaches works out great.  It’s well located for all of our favorite places and right along one of the bike paths on South Padre.  After 3 weeks on the island and a few days back in Harlingen, we’re headed north.

Our first night is in Carrizo Springs, at the SB RV Park.  This is a nice park located just south of town, in a quiet residential area.  The park offers about 70 long pull through gravel sites, a nice outdoor pool and even some covered sites.  Most of the guests appear to be long term, as are most of the parks in the part of Texas.  From Carrizo Springs, we’re parked at Seminole Canyon State Park.  We’ve always been intrigued as we pass by on the highway, but there’s never been any cellular service for internet.  However, with our StarLink, that’s of no concern, so we opt for 2 nights here.  The park visitor center is interesting and best of all, the biking trails along the canyon provide amazing views of area near the confluence of the Rio Bravo, Pecos River and the Rio Grande.  And, if you are ever in Comstock, TX – don’t miss the delicious burgers and onion rings at The J & P Bar and Grill!

We continue NW along the Rio Grande until it leaves us at Big Bend.  Near here we spend 1 night at the Lost Alaskan in Alpine, TX complete with a visit to our favorite restaurant in West Texas, Reata.  From Texas we cross over into New Mexico and spend 1 night in Roswell, NM at the Town & Country RV Park, and 2 nights in Santa Fe at Santa Fe Sky’s.

It’s been another great Spring Road Trip.  All in all, 118 nights in 22 parks across nearly 4500 miles of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.  Summer camping start soon with a trip to Hermosa, SD for the annual Western Region Montana Owners rally.  More from the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Rincon West, Tucson, AZ

Good morning from Tucson.  After a relatively short drive from Apache Junction, we’re parked in site #817 at Rincon Country West RV Resort in southwestern Tucson.  Just as last year, we’re here for 2 weeks before starting our trip to south Texas.  As with most parks in Arizona, Rincon West is converting many of their RV sites to park models.  However, they have good spaces left exclusively for RV’s, although those rows seem to shrink each year.

Rincon is south of downtown Tucson, along the Santa Cruz River.  While dry most of the year, the Santa Cruz is unique with its path from headwaters in the San Rafael Valley of Arizona, then south into Mexico before making a U-turn and reentering the US near Nogales.  From there the river flows north through Green Valley and Tucson before joining the Gila just south of Phoenix.  Tucson has taken advantage of this long wide river bed by building bike trails along both banks.  In addition there are paths along dry arroyos, closed city streets and abandoned rail tracks.  In all, Tucson has over 1000 miles of bike trails to explore.  We spent several days biking these trails, going from the RV park into downtown for mutual viewing, out towards the airport and south to the end of the path.  With all these trails, there’s plenty to explore – and this park is great for access!

In addition to biking, we also love the foodie scene in Tucson.  This year our bucket list included Amelia’s Mexican Kitchen in north Tucson.  In January the James Beard Awards semifinalists included Amelia’s chef/owner Jose Contreras, nominated Best Chef, the only Tucson semifinalist for 2025.  Amelia’s is located along Grant Road in a small unassuming space – right next to a Circle K and a Mister Car Wash. Reservations were made and on Tuesday we enjoyed a wonderful Mexican dinner and even met the celebrity chef!  Unfortunately Chef Jose didn’t win the Beard award, but we’ll certainly return.  Our meal was excellent!

One of our most exciting excursions was to the Caterpillar’s Proving Ground and Training Center near Green Valley.  On a special invite, we spent the morning touring the facility and crawling around on the massive equipment built by Caterpillar.  This facility is one of only 3 others worldwide, one in Peoria, IL and one in Malaga, Spain.  On 6500 acres, the facility trains customers with real-world application of much of the Cat equipment from paving to excavation to heavy construction and quarry/mining operations.  Thanks Steve, this was an amazing day!

After our Cat experience, we also visited the nearby Titan Missile Museum.  Titan II ICBM site 561-7 is one of only two Titan Missile sites left undemolished after the Cold War.  This site is the only in the nation that offers visitors a view of an entirely preserved ICBM.  The US/USSR agreement stipulated that the silo doors are permanently blocked partially opened and a hole cut into the top of the reentry vehicle (the bomb) allowing spy satellites to confirm our  compliance with the agreement.  But, the control room is fully intact, with the original equipment used to launch this vehicle of destruction. It’s an earie feeling to be in underground bunker looking back in time at the analog gauges, dials, switches and miles of cables.

Encore Meridian, Apache Junction, AZ

After spending 10 nights in Fountain Hills, we’ve moved “down to the city” where we’re parked at Encore Meridian RV Resort in Apache Junction, AZ.  This is another Thousand Trails park, and we’re once again using our free membership for a zero cost stay.  This is very near Campground USA where we’ve stayed the last two years, however is slightly further from Highway 60 and suffers none of the road noise of that park.  Our site, #132 is to the rear of the park, on a corner location and provides full hookups including 2 50A outlets along with a 30A and 20A.  The sites are tight, about 28’ wide and 42’ deep.  Fortunately the sites are offset, so that you’re not staring in the back window of another rig.  And, our corner site seems a bit larger.  The park offers a nice pool, hot tub area, a large library, a billiards room, fitness center and several unique meeting spaces.  Organized activities include weekly coffee/donut gatherings, movie nights, live music, crafts, potlucks and ice cream socials.

For us, Apache Junction is about catching up with friends we haven’t seen – sometimes in over a year.  On Monday after arriving we met good friends for a great dinner at Blanco Cocina & Cantina in Scottsdale.  Wednesday found us with another good friend at Rancho del Tia Rosa in Gilbert – nice patio but service and food quality are lacking.  On Wednesday we joined friends at the local Elks club for great conversation, cheap drinks and good food!  On Friday we enjoyed a performance by Shen Yun, the Chinese dance company at Symphony Hall in downtown Phoenix.  On Tuesday we joined new friends that we’d met in Quartzsite for a trip to a favorite restaurant, Culinary Dropout in Gilbert.  And, we wrapped up our stay in Apache Junction by attending another baseball game at Salt River Fields followed by a delicious dinner at Red White & Brew in Mesa.

Eagle View RV Resort, Ft. McDowell, AZ

Our first stop in the Phoenix area is Eagle View RV Resort in Ft. McDowell.  We first toured Eagle View in 2021, and decided to spend 10 nights this year.  The park is located on, and managed by the Yavapai Nation, just outside of Fountain Hills. Of the 150 sites, SITE MAP about 30 back-in sites overlook the nearby Verde River.  However, the river area is off limits in the Yavapai Nation, access is only allowed for tribal members and elders.  The sites are well laid out at about 35 feet wide, and 55+ feet long with full hookups.  Internal roadways and RV pads are paved.  Facilities include a very nice heated pool in a beautiful outdoor courtyard, a clubhouse with meeting space, 24 hour fitness center, offices, a laundry room and showers/restrooms.  There is also a free casino shuttle allowing easy access to nearby We-Ko-Pa casino and golf resort which is about ½ mile north of the resort.  We enjoyed Eagle View and have booked a full month next year!

The charming Town of Fountain Hills borders the Yavapai Nation to the west and is easily accessible by bike or car from the park.  The town is a master planned community established by Robert McCulloch of McCulloch Properties.  This is the same Robert McCulloch that established Lake Havasu City, purchased the original London Bridge, shipping the bridge to the desert and rebuilt it to stand between the “mainland” and Lake Havasu Island.  Not to be outdone by London Bridge, in Fountain Hills he built the tallest water fountain in the world.  In the center of a large man-made lake, surrounded by a beautiful park, the fountain sends a massive jet of water up to 560 feet into the air every 15 minutes. We enjoyed viewing the fountain from the patio of the nearby All American Sports Bar.  Further from downtown, the Saddle Bronc Grill servers up great food and cocktails.  We also tried SoFrito’s Tapas – providing a great patio for people watching but we thought the food was just OK.  And, with spring baseball in full swing, we enjoyed an afternoon of baseball at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, home of the Rockies and Diamondbacks.

Yuma, Encore Desert Paradise

With the purchase of the new Montana, our dealer, Lazydays RV gave us a 1 year membership in the Thousands Trails program.  This membership allows free stays up to 14 days at many Thousand Trails/Encore parks.  In Yuma, we’re trying out our membership at Encore Desert Paradise park just east of Yuma on the north side of I-8.

If Pirates Den was tight, Desert Paradise is perhaps the noisiest park we’ve ever stayed in.  Our site #79  is very near the corner of Avenue 9E and 28th street.  9E is a very popular cut-off from highway 94 to I-8 and has fairly heavy traffic all day and much of the night.  With an elementary and a middle school further east on 28th St, the constant school traffic starts about 7AM and runs until around 5PM.  And, not to be outdone, train tracks run about a quarter mile away and carry heavy traffic along the I-8 corridor between San Diego and Tucson and points further east.  Whew…!!!  If returning to this area, the Encore Cactus Gardens might be a better option, especially with sites in the far south west corner of that park.

A regular stop for us in Yuma is the Imperial Date Garden in Winterhaven, CA for our annual “fix” of wonderful Medjool Dates.  Last year, 11lbs for $22, this year $20 – maybe the only thing that hasn’t been hit by inflation!

Another favorite trip is across the border to Los Algodones, MX.  On Wednesday we joined friends to walk across the border for some shopping and lunch. On their recommendation, we had lunch at Mi Casa Es Su Casa.  What a great find! We enjoyed a table on the 2nd story balcony with good views, great food and plenty of tasty margaritas.

For those interested in jewelry, especially silver – make sure to visit The Mine.  Jesse Ramos and his family produce some of the most beautiful and finest quality items in Algodones.  Using silver from the mines of Taxco, Mexico, these craftsmen are amazing.  The shop is small, and a bit difficult to find down one of the alleyways.  However, you won’t be disappointed!

Lake Havasu City

Good morning from the banks of Lake Havasu and the Islander Resort, one of our all time favorite RV parks.  Once again we’re in the “pull-through” row, in site #165.  This site isn’t quite as nice as #160 which provides at least a small view of the lake.  However, the resort is very full this year, and we’ve only managed to reserve 5 nights here – so we’ll take whatever site they have available.  Compared to some parks, these sites are big – over 35’ wide and about 50’ long.  All sites are gravel with a small cement pad, 50/30/20 electric, convenient sewer port and high water pressure.  However, no WiFi included in the amenity list  – but plenty of open sky for StarLink!

On Saturday after arrival we enjoyed dinner at the nearby Boathouse, a favorite for drinks, appetizers, burgers or full entrees.  They also open a coffee shop in the morning and provide breakfast burritos and pastries.  On both Saturday and Sunday the Lake Havasu 38th Annual Winterfest Street Festival was in full swing, with miles of vendor booths set-up along McCulloch Blvd.  Crowds and traffic were a bit crazy, so we opted for travel via our newly acquired e-bikes.  Lake Havasu is a fairly bike-friendly town – with a full loop path around the island, bike paths along highway 96 as well as lots of in town streets. Besides the street fair, we also visited Lake Havasu State park on our bikes along with a stop for a refreshing beverage at the very touristy Chair Pub at London Bridge.

On Tuesday we visited another favorite, the College Street Brewhouse and Pub.  The brewery offers a great selection of their own brews and several others from breweries around Arizona.  The outdoor patio is a great spot to catch a sunset and the food is tasty!

Right next door to the Islander is the Nautical Beachfront Resort.  On Wednesday we biked over to the resort to meet friends at Turtle Beach Bar.  This waterfront venue is very relaxing, the service was a bit spotty, but the cocktails and snacks were good.

After only 5 nights at the Islander, we made the short 45 minute trip to Pirates Den RV Resort just north of Parker, AZ.  Pirates Den is below the dam, directly on the banks of the Colorado River.  It’s a beautiful spot, but the sites are tight!  Exactly 25 feet wide, with full hookups and a small concrete slab, the outdoor area is mostly blocked with the tow vehicle which must park across the front.  Riverside sites are 60 feet deep and the rest (including Row #2 where we are) are  50 feet deep.  This makes for tight spaces all around, even at the rear where some of the ladders nearly overlap each other!

Onsite Pirates Den Black Pearl Restaurant does a good job,  we had three hits, the Cowboy Corn Bites, Bonny’s Flash Fried Brussel Sprouts and a pizza called, “The Man with No Name”.  The Baby Back Ribs were a miss – dry and chewy.  Overall, nice location right on the water, great service, and good food.

Mid-week we decided to go check out RV parks in Needles, CA. After exploring several of the parks, we decided there’s nothing there of interest – we’d rather stay in Havasu or Parker.  The best part of the trip to Needles is that it gave us another opportunity to stop at the Boathouse where we enjoyed a few cocktails and their delicious Aha Tuna Tataki appetizer  – absolutely the best we’ve had!  Thanks again Reese, always great to see you and hang out!

Off to Palm Springs

It doesn’t get any better than Outdoor Resorts Palm Springs!  Lush beautiful golf courses wind through the 1200 exclusively RV sites, which are also meticulously maintained.  We’re parked in site #784, the same site that we spent a week in last year.  This year we’ll enjoy 2 weeks in this beautiful park along with fun in Palm Springs and the surrounding area.

For us, Palm Springs is all about great restaurants and foodie destinations.  On Saturday after arriving, we enjoyed wonderful Mexican food and great margs on the outside patio at Felipe’s Palm Springs.  An unassuming café in a small strip center, Felipe’s turns out authentic Guadalajara styled food of rellenos, enchiladas, tacos and creamy, hearty soups.  Great service and wonderful food – we’ll be back!

Then on Wednesday, we’re at Rooster and Pig, another small unassuming place serving a wonderful fusion of Vietnamese-American dishes. Chef/Owner Tai Spendley opened the Rooster in 2016 and has since garnered rave reviews from locals and visitors.  Arriving around 4:30, we joined a long line extending along the parking lot for the restaurant opening at 5PM!  Our favorite dishes included Vietnamese Crispy Rolls, Shaking Beef, Lemongrass Pork Noodle Soup and Panko Chicken Stuffed Curry Balls.  Delicious!

Friday evening starts with a cocktail at Blue Coyote Grill, before dining at The Tropicale, an institution in downtown Palm Springs.  After our wonderful experience last year, we had to return.  And, once again, The Tropicale didn’t disappoint – the place to see and be seen, great food and uncompromising service!

Saturday brunch is at another famous Palm Springs restaurant, the Farm.  With a waitlist of nearly an hour, we enjoy a pre-brunch Bloody Mary at the Front Porch at the Farm before  being seated in the lush, open courtyard, where we enjoyed beautiful weather.  Food options included both sweet &  savory crepes, omelets, salads, sandwiches  and tasty benedicts.

Another brunch on Sunday is at Cactus Jack’s Bar & Grill – an informal eatery in Palm Desert.  Seemingly unchanged since opening in 1987, the diner specializes in Prime Rib including a Prime Rib Benedict.  Other protein intense offerings are Short Rib Benedict, Pork Chops & Eggs, Top Sirloin & Eggs, Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs and more traditional dishes; Biscuits & Gravy, Omelets and Scrambles.  Food was great, service was outstanding and pricing, one of the better values in the Palm Springs area.
