Off to Heber City, UT

After a “close call” for Jury Duty, I’ve been released on Friday and we’re going to head out tomorrow.  The annual Western Regional Montana Owners Club rally starts next Wednesday in Heber City.  This is the same rally that we attended for the first time last June in Dolores, CO.  We’ve also met a smaller group of Montana Owners in Quartzite in January.

Gunnison KOA Journey

We’re going to visit friends in Montrose, but decide that nearly 5 hours is just a bit too far, so our first night is at the KOA Journey in Gunnison. This campground is more like a city park, lush green lawns, big trees and even a small fishing lake.  We’re parked in site #48 which provides a very long back-in site with full hookups right behind the office.  This site isn’t bad, but if the “Kottage” is occupied, you’ll share your patio area for their parking.  We’d prefer to be further around the circle, site # 26, 28 or 16, 18.

Moochdocking in Montrose

From Gunnison it’s a relatively easy trip over to Montrose, including passing through the US 50 Little Blue Creek Canyon Improvement Project.  In Montrose we enjoyed Colorado Boy Pizza and Beers on Sunday evening.  On Monday evening we joined additional friends for an informal dinner of wonderful salads, beans and hot-dogs!  Thanks M&D for letting us “camp” in your front yard.!

Green River State Park, Green River, Utah

From Montrose we’re headed to Green River State Park.  We’ve stayed at Green River before, and have always noted their mosquito problem apparently due to overwatering of the lush grass.  It’s not as bad in previous years, but the little nuisances are still obnoxious when walking through the grass or just after sunset.  We’re parked in site #26, basically just a wide spot in the main road with hookups on the wrong side.  Not optimal, but it’ll work for a quick overnight.  We’d also note that it appears that the park is adding 10-20 new tent sites and at least 1 new shower house.

After Green River, we’ll be in Mountain Valley RV Resort in Heber City for 7 nights.  More from Heber City…

A Southern Colorado Loop

Gunnison Pioneer Museum

We’re off to some of our favorite campgrounds in southern Colorado, starting with the Gunnison KOA.  This KOA is participating in the VKR Appreciation Weekend allowing Value Kard Members to book Friday, September 18th at regular rate and get Saturday, September 19th for free.

We’ve visited this KOA before: Gunnison KOA, August, 2019  This trip we’re parked in site #16 which is a standard back-in site on the western edge of the park.  During this visit we learned that odd numbered sites are pull-in, or what they call nose-in sites.  In some cases these odd/even sites share hookups, making them fairly close to each other.  We prefer the even numbers sites on the outer loop, #20-#40.  While in town, we enjoyed time at the Gunnison Pioneer Museum.

From Gunnison we’re returning to Dolores River Campground.  We’re parked with friends in sites 39, 55 and 56.  These central sites are not nearly as roomy as site #14 back along the pond and river.  We visited Canyon of the Ancients National Monument on this visit.  Unfortunately the visitor center was closed due to Covid-19, however we enjoyed exploring the ruins at Lowry Pueblo.

After our stay in the Four Corners area at Dolores, we’re headed to Alamosa where we’re back to Cool Sunshine RV Park.  Conveniently located in downtown Alamosa, the park provides an easy walk to places like the San Luis Valley Brewing Company.  We’re parked with friends in C6 & C8 and D3.  Either D3 or A9 provide nice private corner locations. From Alamosa we enjoyed an afternoon trip to the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

Blue Mesa Recreation Ranch

After Alamosa we’re headed to Blue Mesa Recreation Ranch, a private membership only campground nestled in a canyon overlooking Blue Mesa reservoir, the largest empound on the Gunnison River. With over 250 sites, PARK MAP this campground offers a bit of everything:  Cottages, Cabins, Tent sites, Premier sites, a playground offering shuffleboard, horseshoes, mini-golf a fishing pond and even a tranquil adults only area with a pool and hot tub.  Internal roadways are paved, with wide graveled sites.  Sites offer a cement slab with a picnic table and surrounding sage brush to provide a bit of privacy.

We’re parked in site 374, high along the northern edge of the ranch with great views over the lower sites and beyond to Blue Mesa.  Nearly all sites are very long back-in’s, with all utilities at the rear.  This configuration makes good sense from a construction standpoint, but generally takes extra lengths of all connectors.  Running along this same utility corridor, WiFi access points are mounted on posts above every 10th site or so. With both excellent signal and speed this WiFi network had no problem handling an IP phone and Roku streaming TV.  This is a nice resort, we’ll be back!

Gunnison KOA

Gunnison KOA

We’ve just left the Gunnison KOA where we spent 1 night on the way to Palisade for the annual Winefest.  This KOA occupies a beautiful area near the Gunnison River just west of town.  The 75 spacious sites are set among a grove of large trees and lush green grass.  This is a “Journey”, complete with a playground, stocked trout pond and a paddle boat pond.  We parked in site #23, a very wide, deep back-in site to the rear of the property.  Just over a wire fence is menagerie of barnyard animals, Shetland ponies, a large Angus steer, several goats and a few pigs.  Apparently some of the animals have found their way into the campground where goats and a huge pig roamed free.  We’d stay here again – it would make a great place to explore Gunnison or perfect for an overnighter.
