Waiting out the storm in San Antonio

Mission Concepcion, San Antonio

With the threat of thunderstorms and hail across our homeward path, we’ve opted to spend another day in San Antonio. We arrived here on Monday from Harlingen.  We’re parked at Travelers World just south of downtown San Antonio.  We opted to check out this park because of the location along the San Antonio bike/hike trail system.  Via the trail, we’re only about 4 miles from downtown. The trail continues about 6 miles south just beyond the I-410 loop and incorporates 4 of the Spanish Colonial missions built along the San Antonio River starting in the 1720s.

Travelers World has 165 full hookup sites, beautiful trees, lawns, individual concrete patios with picnic tables and is impeccably clean.  Besides the office, library and game room there is a small pool area, a dance hall, a shower house and a few maintenance buildings scattered around.  One side of the park backs up to Riverside Golf Course with amazing views across the course and along the San Antonio river.  For river views the best sites are along Allegro Circle, sites K-U.  For privacy overlooking the golf course, sites 10-15H are best.  The largest sites seem to designated for large trailers and coaches, run right down the middle of the park in sites 83-105.  We’re in a smaller back-in site #125, along the golf course, but very tight when you have neighbors in the sites immediately adjacent. (you can touch your neighbors slide-out while sitting at your picnic table) (SITE MAP) The WiFi service is provided by Tengo and is adequate for most uses.   We did have a few short term outages each day and found that it wasn’t fast enough for Hulu broadcasts.  This is our 3rd stay at a park with Tengo Internet, and all have been less than impressive.  However, there is good Verizon 3G and somewhat flakey T-Mobile 3G and 4G coverage available as alternatives.

Hanging out on South Padre Island

25 03 2013
South Padre Island

South Padre Island

After attending the Onion Fest in Westlaco on Saturday, we packed up and moved 40 miles further down the Rio Grande to the Gulf of Mexico on South Padre Island. We’ll be staying at the Isla Blanca RV Park, a Cameron County park of over 600 sites. The park encompasses nearly the entire south end of the island, almost from the Queen Isabella causeway to the Gulf of Mexico and the Brownsville ship channel. On the east side of the RV park is a mile of sandy beach, with a couple of snack pavilions and a long fishing jetty.

We’re going to hang out here for a week so, I’ll take more pictures and update information on South Padre over the week.

Tropic Winds RV Resort

Tropic Winds RV Resort

Tropic Winds RV Resort

After 2 weeks on the road, we’ve arrived in the lower Rio Grande Valley. Temperatures for the last few days have been in the 70’s and 80’s, with some gusty winds. Valley temps are supposed to be over 100 by the weekend. We’re parked at Tropic Winds RV Resort in Harlingen, TX. We’ll be here for a few days for some laundry, shopping and restocking. With over 500 spaces, laundry facilities, club houses, tennis courts and of course shuffle board courts, this age-qualified park caters to “Winter Texans”. Many have been here since late last year, and even more arrived in January after escaping the northern cold. But, the return migration is on. Ever since arriving in the Rio Grande region we’ve watched the “see-you-next-year” goodbyes and the early morning departures. In Lajitas there were over 50 sites vacated during our 3 day stay.

Like Broke Mill in Del Rio, the WiFi service is provided by Tengo Internet. However there is no service included in the site rate (except for an open hot spot in the main club room). We opted to use our Verizon broadband service. Full 3G and 4G access was available on both Verizon and T-Mobile. Each site is a back-in configuration with concrete patio, has full hookups and basic cable with over 70 channels. Tropic Winds is just north of Harlingen and while very convenient to highways and even the airport, a very quiet setting. In addition to the daily site fee ($34 when we were there) there is a $3 resort fee addition and a 10% Good Sam deduction.

We’re headed to South Padre Island next week, more from there…

Lake Casa Blanca State Park

Casa Blanca Lake State Park

Casa Blanca Lake State Park

After bypassing several Texas State Parks due to inadequate internet and or cellular coverage, we’re parked at Casa Blanca Lake State Park site #113 with full bars of 4G service.  Formerly a Laredo city park, in 2001 Texas State Parks started managing this urban park of 360 land acres and 1650 water acres.  The campsites are located on 3 loops with many right at water’s edge.  Each site has a covered picnic table and except for the walk-in tent sites, all provide water and electricity hookups.  Some sites also offer a sewer connection. There’s a boat ramp, group picnic areas, an RV dump station, playgrounds and scenic biking trails.  In all, this small State Park has a lot to offer and is very convenient to city amenities.

Laundry Day in Del Rio

18 03 2013
Broke Mill RV Park, Del Rio, TX

Broke Mill RV Park, Del Rio, TX

We’ve left Big Bend and continued south along the Rio Grande to Del Rio. We’re at Broke Mill RV Park, just north of the city. This is a fairly new park, with all the amenities that RV’ers expect. Long level sites with plenty of space between, 70 channels of cable TV and immaculate facilities including a laundry room, a fitness center appointed with the latest gear, a very clean shower house and a glistening clean pool. If there’s a downside to this park is the proximity to the highway. Right off of highway 90 and at the intersection of loop 79 makes it very convenient, but also provides a lot of traffic noise. But, while we are here the temps are in the upper 90’s, so no problem keeping the windows closed and A/C cranked up.

We’re about 6 miles north of the commercial center of Del Rio, making access for a resupply stop at their Super Walmart very handy. We’ve also taken on a full tank of propane from a nearby supplier. Being Sunday night, “pizza night” at our house, we enjoy the local Pizza Hut. We’ve now been on the road a total of 12 days, and it’s time to do laundry. The 5 washers and dryers at Broke Mill (at a reasonable price of $1.25 each) make quick work out of this drudgery. We’ve also located a nearby RV parts supplier that has parts necessary for the final water system leak solution – we’ve had a temporary fix in place since back at Ft. Davis.

It’s also a full work day after being isolated with virtually no internet or cellular service in Big Bend National Park. The TengoNet WiFi service is adequate at Broke Mill, but certainly isn’t up to the good service we’ve had in other parks. However, all in all it was a very productive stay in Del Rio. On Tuesday we’ll travel to Larado which is our last stop before arriving at Harlingen. We’re planning to stay a couple of nights at Casa Blanca State Park, and are hopeful that we’ll have full cellular coverage. More from Laredo tomorrow…

Along the Rio Grande

13 03 2013

We arrived in Lajitas just after 4pm on Tuesday to find our first 80 degree weather.  Quickly the sweatshirts were stowed and jeans replaced with shorts.  Our trip down from Fort Davis was just over 4 hours with a refueling and food replenishment stop in Alpine.  We also stopped at the Ace Hardware before leaving Fort Davis for some plumbing repair tools and fittings.  (more on our leaking water system later)

Maverick Ranch RV Park

Maverick Ranch RV Park

Lajitas was originally conceived as a very exclusive golf resort & hideaway on what is basically a dead-end road between Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park along the Rio Grande river and Mexican border.  The first clients jetted into the private landing field from Midland, Austin, Dallas/Ft. Worth and other large Texas cities.  The resort known for opulence, exclusivity and remote location survived until 2006 when loans could not be paid.  In late 2007 a partnership from Dallas took over the resort, stripping it of the exclusive image, hoping to attract more clients as well as large tournaments.  Things were going well until disaster struck in September of 2008 when Tropical Storm Lowell dumped what some called a “500 year flood” forcing Mexican officials to open flood gates on upstream dams.  The river ran a quarter mile wide and 13 feet deep through Lajitas.  Parts of “The Ambush” course were underwater for over 4 weeks – and when un-submerged quickly burned up due to the irrigation system being lost.  The back nine of The Ambush course – which included the famed “international” hole that allowed players to tee up a shot in the United States and hit to a green in Mexico, and four holes on an island in the river, were damaged beyond repair and never rebuilt.  Today the course stands on a higher embankment above the flood plain of the river.

The RV park at Lajitas, the Maverick Ranch, is north of the resort just at the base of the famed Lajitas Plateau.  101 full hookup sites (about 50 include cable TV) are arranged in rows that feature shared “back-to-back” facility pedestals.  Most have a concrete pad, a few with picnic tables and scrubby grass between the sites. A few long deep sites around the edges offer more privacy and even a few shade trees.  There is a very nice clubhouse/office building at the entrance and a laundry, shower, pool area in the services building at the rear of the property.  Full resort services (golf, spa, shopping) are available for RV’ers.  The park’s WiFi service was included in the site rate and adequate for our needs.  There was spotty T-Mobile service and no Verizon service.
