Off to the Montana Owner’s Rally

We’re bound for Dolores, CO and the Western Regional Montana Owners Club Rally.  However, we’ll make 2 stops before the rally and one after.

On Friday we packed up and made the very short drive (12 miles) to Circle the Wagon’s in La Veta, CO.  We’re joining up with friends that we met several years ago when they were work camping in this park.  This is also the park where we spent most of the Summer & Fall during the house build in 2018.  It as a weekend full of great food & fun – from the new Lokal Burger café in the former Corners Diner building to a fabulous dinner at Alys’ Restaurant. https://www.alysrestaurant.com/

Mountain Merman Brewing Company

While in La Veta we learned about the grand opening of the Mountain Merman Brewing Company on July 1st.  This new brewing company is in the former location of the Capture Colorado real estate office on Main Street.

They already have collaborative brews in the works for opening day with Square Peg Brewerks in Alamosa and Platt Park Brewing in Denver.

We last visited this park in 2020.  Several upgrades are immediately noticeable, a big new “lodge” building is underway, and the WiFi system has been upgraded.  However, as with everything – prices are up.  Our 2020 visit was $45/night, this visit is $57/night.  Ouch!

“Out the Back Window”: Rio Grande River at Woods & River Campground, Del Norte, CO

We’re back in a riverside site, and on our previous visit these sites had no WiFi service.  With new towers along the river, downloads blaze along at over 80Mb and uploads are nearly that fast.  The T-Mobile network also appears to have been upgraded, screaming along at 30Mb download and nearly 10Mb upload.  Apparently there’s plenty of bandwidth in this sleepy little town along the Rio Grande river!

Grand Canyon Railway RV Park, Williams, AZ

After some very chilly nights on the road, we’ve finally arrived in Arizona.  However, just 40 miles west of Flagstaff at nearly 7000′, the temps are still almost as cold as Durango and Monument Valley.

We’re parked at the Grand Canyon Railway Company, a railroad, hotel and RV park in central Williams.  The park, of about 125 sites is very well laid out, roomy, with all asphalt driveways and pads.  Utilities are convenient and include “DirecTV cable TV” outlets.  The 480p, stretched image broadcasts out of Phoenix are interesting to say the least.

Situated between I-40 and the Grand Canyon train rail line, we expected this park to be very noisy.  However, with minimal tourist trains running, and our electric heater providing background noise, we found the park to be fairly quiet.  We’d stay here again.

Conveniently located across the street from the RV Park is Grand Canyon Brewing & Distillery.  The brewery offers about a dozen brews, about 8 specialty spirts and 4 “ready to drink” canned cocktails.  In addition, they offer tasty food items such as brewery wings, soups, salads and burgers and sandwiches.  MENU

After 3 nights in Williams, we’ll head to Lake Havasu City, and hopefully warmer temps.  More from Havasu!

Hanging out in San Antonio

Good morning from site G2 at the KOA in San Antonio!

We like this campground – nestled in a gentle bend in Salado Creek, this KOA offers around 300 sites in a nicely wooded location just east of downtown San Antonio.  This “KOA Holiday”, with swimming pool, fishing pond, onsite Hunt’s Brothers Pizza, Fred’s Fixin’s Café serving breakfast and lunch, plenty of hiking along Salado Creek and great sites, cabins and other facilities.  The fancy KOA Patio sites go for upwards of $80/night, full hookup pull-throughs are $60/night and more basic, but with prime locations, are back-in water/electric for $50/night.

Since departing Arizona, we’ve been on the lookout for possible Covid vaccination locations as we travel across Texas.  Prior to arriving in San Antonio, we’ve secure our first vaccination in Alice, TX.  Alice constantly comes up as an available Texas location, and it’s just about 2 hours south of San Antonio.  So, on Thursday we make the drive to Alice to receive our first jabs.  We’re scheduled for #2 back at Alice, but hopeful that we can move to a CVS on South Padre or closer in Brownsville or Harlingen.  We’ll see how things progress.

On Friday afternoon we head for the River Walk in search of a quiet outside table for a late lunch and a few beers.  However, things are a bit too busy and way too many maskless faces make our time on the River Walk short.  After a quick beer at the Little Rhein Prost Haus we head back to the KOA.

After exploring possibilities off the busy River Walk, we discovered Black Laboratory Brewing just 3 miles from the KOA in the unique Dignowity Hill neighborhood. This area is one of the up and coming neighborhoods of inner San Antonio and boasts some beautiful old homes.  Black Laboratory Brewing has been in their east side location for about a year, opening just prior to the Covid shutdowns last March.  Fortunately with lots of creativity (and no doubt, lots of capital) the owners managed to stay in business and are today creating some very unique brews.  We enjoyed Mox’s IPA (named after the breweries dog mascot) and Grizzly Greg’s Mountain Ale, a great tasting amber brewed with Texas honey and juniper barriers.

With winds forecast to 45 MPH on Saturday, we opt to spend one more night at the San Antonio KOA.  On Sunday we made the transit to Rivera, TX – and another favorite park, SeaWind RV Park.  We’re in site 143, an interior back-in site that provides nice space and privacy. From Rivera we’ll continue into the Rio Grande Valley, and to Tropic Winds RV Resort in Harlingen before moving out to South Padre Island.  More from SPI…

Colorado Mountain Winefest

We’re in Palisade, CO for the 28th annual Colorado Mountain Winefest.  “Home” for 3 nights will be the Palisade Basecamp RV Resort located along a bend in the Colorado River just as it flows into the Grand Valley in western Colorado.  Here over 20 wineries and vineyards serve up the best of Colorado wines, meads and ciders.  And, it’s these liquid libations that are on display this weekend, as more than 60 wineries will meet at the #1 Winefest in the Nation as decided by USA Today.

The Basecamp RV Resort it relatively new, having opened early last year. The entrance road bisects an orchard of cherries and peaches.  Once inside, the sites are laid out on a bluff above a natural curve in the Colorado River, including several tent sites in a lower area right on the river banks.  Facilities including a shower house, main office/store a covered group area and a sparkling swimming pool. There are 6 different RV site types (back-in, river-view, pull-through, etc.), several rustic cabins, a group tent area and 2 apartment type suites in the renovated homestead.

After spending time touring some of the wineries in a stop at Island Acres back in 2017, on Friday we returned to the favorite Palisade Brewing Company for some snacks and beers.  Following, we walked to the 357 Bar & Grill for a true diner meal.  Next time we’d like to check out The Palisade Café 11.0.  On Saturday we enjoyed perfect weather, free shuttle service provide by the town of Palisade and nearly 100 vendors offering unlimited sips and snacks at the Winefest.  All in all, a great weekend in the Grand Valley!
