Off to Woods and River, Del Norte, CO

Good morning from the banks of the Rio Grande river in Del Norte, CO!  We’re parked at Woods & River RV, a beautiful park with groves of trees that are just beginning their fall color transition.  Sites along the river are enormous and we’re parked “backwards” so that we can share our door-to-door area with a good friend that is joining us as well as enjoy the beautiful view out the back windows.  These lower sites provide power and water, but no dump ports.  However, there is a dump station available or other sites above provide full hookups.

Del Norte is a small town on the western edge of the fertile San Luis valley in southern Colorado.  Outside of Idaho, this area produces more potatoes than anywhere else in the US.  Along with lettuce, spinach and quinoa – the valley is known for the unique soil minerals, warm days and cool nights.  While exploring the area, we discover the “Worth the Drive Family Bakery” in Monte Vista.  This Amish bakery is indeed worth the drive with delicious baked goods including yummy cinnamon rolls, fried pies and wonderful sourdough breads.  We also enjoy a few beers at the local Three Barrel Brewing Company in Del Norte and great dinner at Colorado Grill & Taphouse.

From Del Norte, we’re off to Cherry Creek State Park in the Denver area.  We’re returning to have repairs done to the front cap from damage that occurred during the delivery inspection of the new rig.  Our site #50 provides full hookups, but is a bit noisy due to it’s proximity to Parker Road.  Better sites would be in the Coyote loop, specifically #27 or #31.  After leaving the trailer overnight, we’re very pleased with the results when we return to pick it up.  Austin with Mobile Polishes did an amazing job on the repair.  Thanks again Austin!

This will be our last trip of the season, next weekend will be time to winterize the new rig.  We’ll hit the road again in January, first stop will be in Quartzsite for the annual gathering of Montana Owners along with the big Quartzsite RV Show, the largest gathering of RVers in the world.  More from the desert of Arizona!

Off to the Montana Owner’s Rally

We’re bound for Dolores, CO and the Western Regional Montana Owners Club Rally.  However, we’ll make 2 stops before the rally and one after.

On Friday we packed up and made the very short drive (12 miles) to Circle the Wagon’s in La Veta, CO.  We’re joining up with friends that we met several years ago when they were work camping in this park.  This is also the park where we spent most of the Summer & Fall during the house build in 2018.  It as a weekend full of great food & fun – from the new Lokal Burger café in the former Corners Diner building to a fabulous dinner at Alys’ Restaurant. https://www.alysrestaurant.com/

Mountain Merman Brewing Company

While in La Veta we learned about the grand opening of the Mountain Merman Brewing Company on July 1st.  This new brewing company is in the former location of the Capture Colorado real estate office on Main Street.

They already have collaborative brews in the works for opening day with Square Peg Brewerks in Alamosa and Platt Park Brewing in Denver.

We last visited this park in 2020.  Several upgrades are immediately noticeable, a big new “lodge” building is underway, and the WiFi system has been upgraded.  However, as with everything – prices are up.  Our 2020 visit was $45/night, this visit is $57/night.  Ouch!

“Out the Back Window”: Rio Grande River at Woods & River Campground, Del Norte, CO

We’re back in a riverside site, and on our previous visit these sites had no WiFi service.  With new towers along the river, downloads blaze along at over 80Mb and uploads are nearly that fast.  The T-Mobile network also appears to have been upgraded, screaming along at 30Mb download and nearly 10Mb upload.  Apparently there’s plenty of bandwidth in this sleepy little town along the Rio Grande river!

Woods & River RV Park

Wood & River RV Park, Del Norte, CO

We’re parked at Woods & River RV Park, in Del Norte, and only about 15 miles downstream along the Rio Grande River from South Fork where we camped just 12 days ago.  Sites here are classed as Standard ($35/nt), Meadows ($40/nt) and Riverside.  We’re riverside in site #10, a spacious and well shaded site right on the banks of the river.  These sites offer 50/30/20 amp electric hookups and water taps.  Because of the closeness to the river, these sites do not have septic, but twice weekly pump out service is provided for stays of 5 nights or more at no additional charge.

Meadow sites are in two rows off the river, also with twice weekly pump-out service.  Standard sites are above, provide full hookups, but are much tighter and much less shade.  The WiFi is non-existent in the lower Meadow or Riverside sites, but both T-Mobile and Verizon hot spots worked well.  Satellite aiming is a challenge in the shaded sites along the river, but we managed to find 2 of 3 satellites.

These Riverside sites are pull-thoughs, but facing the river.  For rear lounge rigs, it would be best to pull in backward and deal with connections on the “wrong” side.  We liked Woods & River, and will probably return.
